Watercolour Painting Courses

Janet is a popular and inspiring teacher working in watercolour and mixed media.

When painting in watercolour it is easy to work too tightly, Janet helps students to loosen up in their technique using big brushes, sticks and feathers to apply paint and to try various drawing media which can be worked into wet watercolour.

Workshops usually start with big tonal drawings using charcoal or conte crayon and time to explore ways to apply watercolour and play with the way it flows and some times has a mind of its own.

Teaching is through a mixture of demonstrations and individual tuition making theses courses suitable for all abilities.  You will be encouraged to work quickly and freely to capture the essence of your subject.

We usually look at composition, and the use of tone: getting darks dark enough is often a problem in watercolour. You will try working with a limited palette to get to know a few colours really well, but also try unusual colour combinations.

Janet prefers to use artists quality tube colour to get rich juicy washes. A list of recommended colours and an equipment list will be sent to you on booking. For all courses all equipment and materials can be provided for an extra £20, please ask for this when you make your booking.

Contact Janet to be added to her mailing list to be the first to hear about new courses.

She is also able to offer demonstrations and workshops to local art groups, email: janet@janetjudge.com  for more information.

In March there should still be Camellias, Magnolia and Daffodils but Rhododendrons and Azaleas might also be breaking into flower. In October and November the Hydrangeas will still be flowering in a more muted palette with a hint of Autumn colour creeping into the surrounding landscape.

Based in the Function Room at this stunning garden on the banks of the Helford river, there are views down the garden to the river and the hills beyond.

Students will have the  opportunity to paint in the gardens or on the terrace, or from a colourful variety of still life subjects reflecting the seasons which always include flowers from the gardens and in autumn a veritable ‘harvest festival’ of fruit, squash and pumpkins.

At The Mullion Cove Hotel

Watercolour is the perfect medium for painting the sea and coast and the Mullion Cove Hotel is in the perfect position to be able to do this, situated right above this stunning coast and harbour.

At any time of year you might be able to work outside either to make a quick sketch or completed painting. The Studio is a large light room perfect if the weather is bad or you prefer to work inside.

Janet will start with exercises to help you loosen up and experiment with different ways to depict the transparent sea, stunning skies and rugged cliffs of this stretch of coast.

Janet often uses conte crayon (hard pastel) or other drawing media especially when working outside. You will have a chance to experiment with these media and a variety of different brushes, tools and techniques.

You will be helped and encouraged to develop your own painting interests and style. There will be a mixture of demonstrations and individual tuition making this course suitable for all abilities except the absolute beginner. An equipment list will be sent on receipt of your booking.

Refreshments and delicious lunches will be available in the hotel.

This course is not residential but you can contact the hotel directly to enquire about staying.
